Jenny Vincent Minkey

In the Bag is a series of interviews that dive into the streamlined packing habits of travelers we think you should know about.

JVM PROFILE SHOT

Jenny Vincent Minkey is a fashion working-girl operating on the philosophy that being stylish is a conscious choice and can be learned (phew!).  She also happens to be an off-duty trendsetter, showing up in The Sartorialist and chicontheroad.blogspot. Lucky for us, Jenny has parlayed her gift to styling we mortals to positive effect at Urban Darling.  When we look our best, we feel our best, enabling us to do our best, simple as that.

A design veteran for brands such as Ralph Lauren and The GAP, she is currently traveling in Asia for inspiration, and developing PROVOCATIVES, a swimwear line.

What type of trip is it?  Christmas vacation.

Destination?  Traveling through Mexico:  Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, Isla Holbox, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen.

How many days?  3 weeks.

Any travel buddies?  My best friend!

Local weather is like…65-80F.

What’s the packing strategy?  Pack light and be ready for all occasions!

How many bags and suitcases? 1 suitcase, 1 back pack.

Are you checking in or carrying on?  Carry on!

What’s in your carry-on?  Everything I need for the trip i.e. bikini (and alternate bra!), camera, canteen, cover-up that doubles as an oversize top, cut-off shorts, two-day dresses (one woven, one knit), smock with a little sheen for the evening, comfy walking sandals, shawl, and hula hoop.

When you’re in the airport, what do you do?  Going through security check via airline app before arriving at airport so I can go straight to the terminal.

Before getting on a flight…I eat and use the restroom.

Do you have any travel aids?  I bring my canteen and fill up with water at terminal water fountain; I try not to encourage the use of plastic…headphones for entertainment and lots of vegan snacks.

Any travel splurges?  Reserve all splurging for shopping while on trip!

Do you use any travel apps or checklists?  Airline, currency converter, and weather apps!

The book you’re bringing is an iPad full of all kinds of books.

Are you a prep packer or last-minute type?  Always prep-pack a week in advance.

Never leave home without…Lip and balm, hand cream.

Have you ever missed a flight?  A few close calls but never missed a flight!

Any tips for fellow travelers you find helpful?   Know the weather of your destination in advance so there are no surprises.  And be flexible!

JVM TRAVEL ESSENTIALS PANORAMA

Some of her must-haves:  Dresses for the warm day-into-evenings in slinky crêpe de chine and jersey (one short, one full-length) to wick moisture away. Airy white tops, bikinis from her line for wear-testing (and play), shawl for cover, fire dancing practice chains for sport, aluminum canteen to stay hydrated. Yes, that is a hula hoop. Go with it.
